If you're anything like me, you probably have an ancient kitchen bin from a supermarket sitting somewhere regrettably obvious in your kitchen. You know, one of those plastic bins with the black bag always hanging over the end because it doesn't fit properly. The plastic just seems to absorb the bin smell, and the colour never coordinates with your kitchen the precise way you'd like.
So when I was moving to a new place, of course I didn't want to bring my ancient plastic kitchen bin with me. It smells, it's clumsy, and I wasn't really inclined to be constantly reminded of all of the rubbish my husband and I generate. There are plenty of options for more expensive, more attractive bins, but I just wanted to hide it all away; that way I only have to look at it on garbage day. If you're like me and you have no desire to let anyone see your bin (or look at it yourself), perhaps you'll consider one of these great built-in bins that I found. They can slide underneath a cupboard and eliminate all the annoyance of having the bin in the way. I've chosen my personal top five options for built-in kitchen bins.
Something like the Brabantia 18L Built-In Separator Bin would be perfect. It acts like a drawer, so it slides out when you need it, and cleanly away in a cupboard when you don't. If you don't want your kitchen to be marred by your bin at all, this is the obvious choice. It has several easy to remove waste outlets, so you can decide how to organize your rubbish and can clean these individual units rather than taking the entire set-up out of your cupboard every time a suspicious smell emerges.
Another great choice is the Hailo Multi Box 2x 15L Built-In Bin, especially if you have a small kitchen. This easy-to-assemble bin can fit in small cupboards from as little as 30cm wide. As with my first choice, it also has two compartments for rubbish, meaning it's easier to clean and waste can be readily sorted.
For a bin that looks more like, well, a bin, the Hailo Compact Box, a 15L built-in bin, mounts neatly on the back of your cupboard door. The lid automatically slides to the side as you open the cupboard door, making it simple to dispose of your rubbish and easy to remove the inner bin for disposal and cleaning. This bin is ideal for a small cupboard and can be affixed to either a right or left hand door.
In a big kitchen, more space for rubbish and recycling is definitely needed. The Simplehuman 35L Pull-out Recycler bin slides into your cupboard on a commercial grade track, ensuring that it won't fail and the bins won't fall out. The two large bins that mount on the track can be used to sort recycling and rubbish or to store a little extra rubbish. It also has a five-year guarantee, so if you're looking for a high-quality built-in bin, this one is worth considering.
My top built-in kitchen bin has to be the Hailo Profiline Trio, due to their clever colour-coding system. Sorting recycling is always a hassle for me, so the ability to sort my rubbish as it goes in sounds perfect. Three bins with an 18L capacity each means that this system has a total storage of 54L. That's a huge bin, and ensures that the ProfiLine trio will reliably store all of your rubbish until it's time to be taken out.
